The attorney representing Latoya ‘Buju’ Bulgin’s family says the murder charge brought against the police officer involved in the matter, represents an important step in the pursuit of justice.

Isat Buchanan said he has supported Bulgin’s relatives throughout this difficult process, advocating for accountability and ensuring that their concerns were properly placed before the relevant authorities.

The lawyer’s comments follow a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecution that Constable Andrew Wilson be charged in connection with the fatal shooting of 45-year-old Bulgin, in Granville Square, St. James, on May 18.

The DPP’s ruling followed a probe by the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM).

The murder charge has been widely accepted by members of the public, who have condemned Bulgin’s killing.

Buchanan said the family is grateful that the case has been given the attention it deserves.

He also noted that this development is particularly significant in a high-crime society where concerns about police accountability remain a matter of national importance.

He said at a time when the number of police killings has exceeded one hundred, the decision to bring charges demonstrates that no one is above the law, and that allegations involving the use of deadly force, must be subjected to scrutiny and due process.

He said it is a step in the right direction for accountability, public confidence and the rule of law.

Buchanan noted that while relatives welcome this development, they remain mindful that the matter is before the court and will await the outcome of the trial process.
