As a powerful storm hits the east coast of the United States many residents, including Jamaicans in impacted areas are facing “near impossible” conditions.

The historic winter storm has resulted in 54 million people being placed under blizzard warnings, and prompted travel restrictions in multiple areas, including a travel ban in New York City.

According to the National Weather Service, parts of the U.S. have seen over 22 inches of snowfall with over 15 inches in New York’s Central Park.

So far more than 5000 flights into and out of the U.S. have been cancelled with hundreds of thousands of people without power.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, a Jamaican man who lives in Maryland, explains that though there is no travel ban in his state residents have been experiencing snowfall.

He further explains that this creates challenges for those trying to move around especially for work.

Over in Queens, New York where non-essential travel is banned, one woman describes how her family has been trapped inside her home due to the snow.

It is the first time in nine years that New York has been under a blizzard warning.

Another woman notes that while her job as a healthcare worker allows her free movement, her offices have been closed due to the storm.

Winter storm warnings also stretch from North Carolina to Northern Maine with warnings also in place in parts of Eastern Canada.
