Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says Jamaica supports constructive dialogue between the United States and Cuba, aimed at de-escalation, reform and stability.
Dr. Holness who is also outgoing Chairman of the Caribbean Community, CARICOM, made the declaration today.
He was speaking at the 50th Regular Meeting of Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM, in St. Kitts & Nevis.
His statement comes amidst tensions between Cuba and the US.
The US has reportedly implemented measures to cut off Cuba’s oil supply, affecting other key sectors such as health care, in the Caribbean nation.
Addressing the CARICOM meeting Dr. Holness said the situation in Cuba must be addressed.
He said there should be no doubt that Jamaica stands firmly for democracy, human rights, political accountability and open market-based economies.
United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to participate in the CARICOM meeting tomorrow.
He is expected to reaffirm the United States’ commitment to working with CARICOM member states to enhance stability and prosperity in the hemisphere.
