Taxi associations urge Gov’t not to split 16% fare increase

Two taxi associations have urged the Government not to split the 16% fare increase.

At yesterday’s meeting between the Government and public passenger vehicle operators, Finance Minister Fayval Williams indicated that operators will have to wait a little longer to learn if the fare increase will be granted all at once or in stages.

In 2023 the Government approved a 35% fare increase of which 16% remains outstanding.

The Transport Ministry will be bringing the issue to Cabinet on June 1.

President of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODDS) Egeton Newman urged the Government to take splitting the 16% increase off the table noting that operators have waited a long time for this adjustment.

Mr. Newman’s appeal was supported by President of the Southern Taxi Association, Charles Powell.
