The right of persons of African descent in the diaspora to return to the mother continent, Africa, is not an act of charity or compassion.

President of Ghana, John Mahama, made the statement at a Special Joint Sitting of Parliament yesterday.

This is as he expressed his intention to push for a right of return for all members of the African Diaspora, as part of his manifesto when he assumes chairmanship of the African Union (AU) next year.

Mr. Mahama is in Jamaica on a State visit, where he is also the guest for the island’s Emancipation and Independence celebrations.

He told Jamaican Parliamentarians that Ghana passed the ‘Right of Abode Act’ in 2000 and is working on a ‘Homeland Return Bill’ to create formal pathways for citizenship for African descendants wishing to reside in the West African country.
