12 people are homeless, following a fire at a dwelling house in Old Folly, Discovery Bay, St. Ann, last night.

There was no report of injury.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB) indicate that the fire resulted from an electrical short circuit originating within the panel box located in the living room area.

Acting Commissioner of the Brigade, Kevin Haughton told IRIE FM News that firefighters received a report about the blaze at approximately 11:50 PM.

Fire units from the St. Ann’s Bay and Brown’s Town fire stations responded.

On their arrival, a multi-family dwelling house containing 12 compartments was observed engulfed in flames.

Commissioner Haughton said the structure was constructed of reinforced concrete block and nog walls, with a zinc roof.

Despite efforts by firefighters to extinguish the blaze, the building was destroyed.

Of the 12 occupants displaced by the fire,10 were adults while 2 were children.

Meanwhile, the Brigade is reminding the public of the importance of ensuring that electrical installations are properly maintained and periodically inspected by qualified personnel.

Citizens are also encouraged to exercise caution and implement appropriate fire safety measures within their homes.
