Top-of-the-table Barbados Royals endured a dismal performance at the Guyana National Stadium on Saturday, collapsing to 96 for nine and suffering a seven-wicket defeat to St Lucia Kings, who secured their place in the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) playoffs.
After winning the toss and opting to bat, the Royals struggled from the outset as Alzarri Joseph bowled Quinton de Kock for two with an in-swinger. The team never recovered, losing wickets regularly as Joseph and Roston Chase claimed seven wickets between them. Lower-order contributions from Keshav Maharaj (10) and Maheesh Theekshana (14 not out) helped the Royals bat out their 20 overs.
In reply, St Lucia Kings comfortably chased the target. Johnson Charles fell early for six, caught and bowled by Jason Holder, while Faf du Plessis made 26 off 19 balls before being stumped by de Kock off Maharaj. However, the Kings faced little pressure, with Chase (39) and Tim Seifert (21) guiding them to victory with 37 balls to spare.
Joseph, who took four wickets, was named Player of the Match.
Final scores: Barbados Royals 96-9 (20 overs), St Lucia Kings 97-3 (13.5 overs).
Upcoming match: Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Antigua and Barbuda Falcons at 7:00 pm at Guyana National Stadium.
