57-y-o dies 9 days after being beaten in jail cell; murder charge laid

Twenty-two-year-old Malik Lewis, a baker of White River, Buff Bay, Portland, has been charged with murder following an incident at the Buff Bay Police Station in the parish on Friday, September 20 this year.

Lewis is charged with the murder of 57-year-old Patrick Perry, a farmer of Long Bay in the parish.

Reports from the Port Antonio police are that about 10:05 am, Perry was in the lockup at the station when a commotion was heard on the cellblock.

Police personnel visited the cells, where Perry was found unresponsive after being severely beaten.

He was assisted to the hospital, where he was being treated.

On Sunday, September 29, Perry succumbed to his injuries.

On Thursday, November 21, Lewis was charged after a question and answer session in the presence of his attorney.

His court date is being finalised.
