PM Holness says the NHT is shifting focus to large-scale housing developments
Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness says the National Housing Trust (NHT) is shifting focus towards large scale master plan developments that can deliver housing at the scale Jamaica requires.
Dr. Holness says in the coming financial year, the NHT will invest approximately $50 billion in housing developments alongside an additional $21 billion in subsidies to support affordability.
According to him, that level of investment is ambitious – but necessary, noting that Jamaica’s housing challenge is a matter of supply.
He says for 5 decades the NHT has stood as one of Jamaica’s most important institutions of social transformation, stating that it has assumed a central and defining role and was an active agent of national recovery after Hurricane Melissa.
Dr. Holness says the company’s role is far greater than recovery.
He was speaking at a thanksgiving church service yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of the NHT at Webster Memorial United Church.
The NHT’s Golden Jubilee is being celebrated under the theme “Building Communities Housing Generations.”
