The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) says a fire that broke out in the barracks area of Up Park Camp yesterday has been successfully extinguished.

In a statement the JDF said the blaze was reported at approximately 7:41 p.m.

The JDF Fire Unit along with teams from the Rollington Town, Half-Way Tree, York Park, Trench Town and Spanish Town fire stations responded swiftly and worked collaboratively to contain the fire.

JDF says a formal investigation will begin once the affected area has been declared safe for entry by the relevant authorities.

The cause of the fire remains undetermined.

Meantime Fire Brigade Commissioner Stewart Beckford said firefighting operations were concluded at approximately 11:50 p.m.

He said the building that was on fire suffered significant damage.
