Taxi operators chastise Transport Minister for announcing immediate implementation of fare increase without also publishing fare table
Some taxi operators are chastising the Transport Minister for announcing the immediate implementation of the fare increase without also publishing the fare table.
They claim that not having a fare table issued by the Transport Authority on the same day the increase took effect, has resulted in confusion, frustration and anger.
This, after Daryl Vaz announced on Tuesday that the outstanding 16 per cent fare increase for public passenger vehicle operators, will be implemented in 2 phases; 8 per cent effective Tuesday June 2 and the other 8 per cent next month.
The matter was discussed at last evening’s virtual meeting of the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS).
President Egeton Newman noted that operators have been waiting years for the outstanding 16 per cent, so waiting until next month for the total implementation is of little consequence.
However, he noted that neither operators nor commuters know exactly how much the new fare is, because there is no fare table.
Newman said the Minister was wrong to announce the increase without the accompanying table.
He urged operators not to overcharge customers.
