Calm restored to Troy community following demonstration by upset residents

Some semblance of calm has been restored to Troy district in Trelawny after angry residents staged a demonstration this morning.

They were upset that a man was detained by the police in relation to Tuesday’s fatal mob attack on another man accused of rape and murder.

The killing of Delroy Coke follows the discovery of the body of 10-year-old Shani Coke along a dirt track.

The residents called for justice.

Head of police area one Assistant Commissioner Glenford miller said officers were deployed to the community to restore order.

He noted that the man held in relation to the mob attack on Coke will be interviewed, while the search continues for others involved.

ACP Miller appealed to residents to report suspected offenders to the police rather than take the law into their own hands.

He noted that Coke was previously charged for various offences and was recently released.

When asked about the safety and security concerns relating to repeat offenders who return to their communities, ACP Miller said while the police can make recommendations that decision resides with the court.

ACP Miller added that the community safety and security branch is offering support to affected relatives and residents.
