An incident along the Rio Nuevo main road in St. Mary last evening pushed Jamaica’s road deaths since the start of the year to 100.
Dead is 28-year-old Oneil Tavares of Rio Nuevo.
Police say at about 8:45 P.M., Tavares was walking along the roadway when he reportedly stepped into the path of a Toyota Hiace motor vehicle.
He was struck and sustained severe injuries.
Tavares died at hospital.
Meanwhile residents say they are saddened by his death.
One woman notes that Tavares lost a few family members recently.
Vice Chair of the National Road Safety Council Dr. Lucien Jones has also expressed sadness at the tragedy.
He said 139 road deaths were recorded in the corresponding period last year.
Dr. Jones said local experts suggest that Jamaica could see a 30% reduction in road deaths this year.
