The National Road Safety Council (NRSC) says Jamaica must remain vigilant in engaging all aspects of the safe systems approach to road safety.

This call follows a weekend in which 13 people were killed on the nation’s roads.

The deaths occurred in separate crashes between Friday and Sunday, including a seven-fatality collision at Bogue Gate, Falmouth, Trelawny.

The weekend’s toll also included a triple fatal crash in Little London, Westmoreland, a fatal crash on Baptist Road in St. Elizabeth and a double fatal crash along the Folly to Anchovy main road in Portland.

A total of 179 people have been killed in 154 fatal crashes up to July 21.

While the figure represents a 17% reduction compared with the corresponding period last year, Vice-Chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones says Jamaica must protect those gains.

Dr. Jones warns that many of those losing their lives are members of the country’s working-age population, making it even more urgent to strengthen road safety efforts.
