A fire at a section of the Ocho Rios Primary School in St. Ann has resulted in the closure of the institution this week.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade said it received the call about 10:40 P.M.
Fire personnel remained on the scene until after 1:00 A.M. as they continued battling the blaze.
Chairman of the School Board, Michael Belnavis confirmed that one classroom block was gutted by the blaze.
The affected block houses four grade 2 classrooms, a literacy room and a physical education room.
Mr. Belnavis said support has already been mobilised to assist with rebuilding efforts ahead of the new school year.
He added that preliminary reports indicate the fire may have been electrical in origin.
The school will remain closed from today until July 3.
Meanwhile, due to the fire, the Ocho Rios Town Hall meeting which was to be held at the school this afternoon has been postponed.
The St. Ann Municipal Corporation which was organizing the meeting, said the postponement will allow for the necessary investigations and clean-up activities to proceed uninterrupted.
