The Opposition People’s National Party has criticised a proposal outlined by Minister of Efficiency and Innovation Ambassador Audrey Marks to bring skilled workers from the United States to Jamaica.

Ambassador Marks said the initiative would see Jamaica accepting the workers, while also sending more seasonal workers to the United States in response to that country’s migration policy.

However, Opposition Senator Cleveland Tomlinson said the proposal does not seem feasible due to the low wages in Jamaica.

He also questioned whether the plan would see the migrants receiving more pay than Jamaicans.

Mr. Tomlinson said the Government should train and pay Jamaicans instead of bringing migrants into the country.

He said if the Government can pay migrants better, it should first seek to pay its citizens better.
