Several public passenger vehicle operators say that while they are dissatisfied with the Government’s phased implementation of the fare increase, they acknowledge the financial impact a full increase could have on the country.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz announced at a press conference this morning that the operators will get half of their 16% fare increase this month and the remaining 8% on July 1.

The first implementation of the adjustment comes into effect today.

Speaking with IRIE FM News after the press conference, President of the All Voice Taxi Association, Lorraine Finnikin, said that operators were anticipating news about the full implementation of the 16% increase.

However, after hearing Minister Daryl Vaz’s explanations, Mr. Finnikin said the Associations’ leaders have decided to allow “good sense to prevail”.

He noted that the Associations will have difficulty getting all operators on board with the Government’s decision.
