There were mixed reactions today as the final 8% of the taxi fare increase took effect across the island.
The full 16% increase is now in effect following an initial 8% adjustment implemented on June 2.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz had said the phased approach was taken to limit the inflationary impact of implementing the entire 16% increase at once.
The 16% adjustment represents the second phase of a 35% fare increase approved in October 2023.
Only a 19 % increase was implemented at that time, while the remaining 16%, which was originally due in April 2024, was deferred amid broader economic concerns.
IRIE FM News spoke with commuters and taxi operators, in Ocho Rios who shared differing views on the adjustment.
One commuter said she is exhausted by the continuous rise in the cost of living.
She noted that although the national minimum wage increased from $16,000 to $17,000 for a 40-hour work week today, the additional income is still not enough to meet her transportation costs.
Another commuter said she understands and accepts the increase, saying she recognises that taxi operators are also facing higher operating costs.
Meanwhile, one taxi operator said the phased implementation of the fare increase has created confusion among some passengers, with many unsure when the full adjustment would take effect.
