The Ministry of Health and Wellness is advising that while the flu season has come to an end, respiratory viruses, including COVID-19 and Influenza A (H1N1), remain in circulation.

Members of the public are, therefore, advised to protect themselves from illness by observing infection prevention and control measures. These include handwashing, sanitising, and the practice of sneezing and coughing etiquette, especially when in public spaces.

Data from the Ministry’s National Surveillance Unit shows that the respiratory infections in the general population are below the alert and epidemic levels.

The National Surveillance Unit further notes that SARS CoV2 was the respiratory virus most frequently identified followed by Influenza A H1N1, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and Influenza A H3N2.

All eligible persons should safeguard their health by receiving influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. Members of vulnerable populations, notably the elderly, the young, pregnant women, and healthcare workers are especially encouraged to observe this precaution.

Persons who are ill with mild symptoms should practice mask wearing, hand washing, hand sanitising and stay away from other persons, especiallyvulnerable individuals.

Drinking fluids and adequate rest is recommended. Persons with persistent or worsening symptoms should seek medical attention, so that treatment can begin at its earliest.

Further, persons are encouraged to practice a healthy lifestyle by exercising regularly, eating healthy and having adequate rest and relaxation. This is proven to boost the immune system making it less likely to be affected by the circulating viruses.
