St. Mary Municipal Corporation identifies two plots of land as proposed sites for new cemeteries
The St. Mary Municipal Corporation’s Public Health and Sanitation Committee has identified two plots of land to be considered for use as cemeteries.
The lands are located in Cape Clear and Charlottenburgh.
The development comes as the municipal authority is concerned about the increase in home burials.
Speaking at the committee meeting yesterday, the Corporation’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ethyln Douglas said the next step in the process is to write to the National Land Agency (NLA).
This is required to have the NLA hand over those lots to the Municipal Corporation once they are designated land settlements for cemeteries.
Following the meeting, Chairman of the St. Mary Municipal Corporation, Fitzroy Wilson said the municipal authority is exploring the construction of a columbarium in the parish to address the need for burial spaces.
A columbarium is a permanent structure designed to store cremated human remains or urns above-ground.
