JHTA to meet with PM Holness to discuss proposed increase in GCT on specified tourism activities

The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) is to meet with Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness on Thursday, July 2 to discuss the proposed increase in General Consumption Tax (GCT) on specified tourism activities.

The government has proposed increasing the GCT on specified tourism activities from 10% to the standard 15% rate.

The increase is to be phased in over two years, beginning April 1, 2027, as part of its revenue measures.

Speaking at the JHTA’s 65th Annual General Meeting and Tourism Forum at the weekend, Past President Christopher Jarrett said the association cannot support the proposed tax increase, arguing that the additional cost cannot simply be passed on to visitors.

He warned that the measure could make Jamaica a less competitive destination.

Mr. Jarrett said the association is advocating a balanced approach that protects the competitiveness of the sector.
