NROCC says traffic management measures implemented at Mammee Bay toll plaza in St. Ann successfully eased weekend congestion on North-South Highway

The National Road Operating and Constructing Company Limited (NROCC) says traffic management measures implemented at the Mammee Bay toll plaza in St. Ann successfully eased weekend congestion on the North-South Highway.

The measures allowed motorists to move through the toll plaza with minimal delays during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

NROCC says the measures faced their first major test during the Reggae Sumfest weekend, which generated exceptionally high traffic volumes along the North-South Highway.

Preliminary traffic data indicate that the Mammee Bay toll plaza recorded 6,384 exiting vehicles on Saturday, July 18. By comparison, traffic volumes on comparable Saturdays have typically remained in the mid-5 thousand range, with 5,699 vehicles recorded on June 28 5,932 on July 5 5,493 on July 12 and 5,522 on July 19.

NROCC says despite the significant increase in demand, motorists continued to move through the toll plaza without significant delays, demonstrating the effectiveness of the temporary measures introduced to improve traffic flow.

The improvements were the result of discussions between the Government through NROCC and the operators of the North-South Highway, Jamaica North South Highway Company Limited (JNSHC).

Those discussions led to several immediate measures, including the construction of additional temporary spill-over lanes to address recurring weekend traffic congestion at the toll plaza.

NROCC says importantly, these temporary works were designed, implemented and funded entirely by JNSHC at no cost to the Government delivering the improvements without any additional cost to Jamaican taxpayers.

NROCC monitored traffic conditions throughout the weekend and confirmed that the measures performed as intended.

Managing Director of NROCC Stephen Edwards says the reggae Sumfest weekend provided the ideal opportunity to test the measures under exceptionally high traffic volumes, and the successful outcome demonstrates that the measures are delivered as intended.

NROCC says it will continue working closely with JNSHC to monitor traffic patterns and implement practical solutions that improve the level of service at the Mammee Bay toll plaza and across the toll road network.
