A man was fatally shot by the police in St Elizabeth and an illegal firearm seized during an ongoing operation in Braes River.
Head of the St Elizabeth Police Division Superintendent Coleridge Minto said a search is now on for two men, believed to be armed, after a gun battle on Friday.
Minto said the police, acting on information, carried out an operation in the Grasmond community of Braes River. However, while approaching premises in the area, three men reportedly fired at them.
“The men ran in separate directions in the bushes. The police returned fire.
“One man was hit and was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. We are now… searching the area for the remaining two persons who fired at the police. We’re also searching for illegal weapons,” Coleridge said.
He said, too, that the men involved in the confrontation with the police on Friday are believed to be responsible for a number of armed robberies across the parish.
