Local stakeholders recently participated in a symposium in observation of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, hosted by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) Basic Needs Trust Fund.

The symposium, held at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel in New Kingston, focused on strategies for reducing poverty and enhancing community development in Jamaica. It saw representatives from the Caribbean Development Bank’s Basic Needs Trust Fund, the Digicel Foundation and the Jamaica Social Investment Fund in attendance.

The observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty can be traced back to October 17 1987.

On that day, over a hundred thousand people gathered at the Trocadéro in Paris, where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948, to honour the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.
