Political Commentator Kevin Obrien Chang says suspension of Dr. Angela Brown Burke from parliament following an incident involving the mace is justified
Political Commentator Kevin Obrien Chang says the suspension of Member of Parliament for St. Andrew South West, Dr. Angela Brown Burke from Parliament yesterday following an incident involving the mace is justified.
The mace is a ceremonial symbol of the authority of the house and the speaker.
Mrs. Brown Burke reportedly touched the mace while the National Reconstruction and Resilience Authority (NARRA) Bill was being examined.
House Speaker Juliet Holness formally named Dr. Brown Burke and ruled, that the Marshall remove her from the house, following the incident.
The Speaker suspended Dr. Brown Burke for the remainder of the sitting.
Dr. Brown Burke remained in the chamber, flanked by other members of the opposition.
After a five-minute recess, the opposition returned to the sitting, without Dr. Brown Burke.
Speaking with IRIE FM News this morning, Mr. Chang said he believes Dr. Brown Burke should be suspended for an extended period.
And Political Commentator Linton Gordon also commented on the matter, noting that the rule should be adhered to.
He however questioned if the mere touching warrants a suspension.
