Shock and sadness continues to spread across the social media space following news of Friday night’s shooting death of a popular 71-year-old man at a bar in May Pen, Clarendon.

A woman was also injured during the gun attack.

The deceased is Harry Hawthorne, a supervisor at bauxite company Jamalco, and a resident of Glenhaven Close in May Pen.

Reports are that about 8:05 pm, Hawthorne and the woman were sitting inside the bar when a vehicle was driven up with armed men, who entered the bar and opened gunfire.

The men then escaped in the waiting motor vehicle.

The police were alerted and, on their arrival, Hawthorne and the woman were seen with gunshot wounds.

The bartender, who was also at the bar, was not harmed.

Hawthorne and the woman were transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead and the woman was treated and released.

Police investigators suspect that the senior citizen’s killing may have been a hit.

Meanwhile, family members were among social media users who expressed shock at Hawthorne’s killing.

“RIEP uncle. Their (the alleged killers’) days will come. Leave all vengeance to God; He (God) will either forgive them or punish them. No unjust deed goes unpunished by Him (God),” said a purported niece of the deceased on Facebook.

“This has gripped me real hard. My sincere condolences to his family. May God give them some comfort and strength at this sad time,” a woman commented on Facebook.

On Instagram, the tributes continued for the slain Jamalco employee.
