Man accused of killing Papine market manager remains hospitalised under police guard

The alleged gunman implicated in yesterday’s murder of Papine market manager Colleen “Sonnia” Bernard, is still admitted in hospital under police guard and is being interviewed by lawmen.

Ms. Bernard, an employee of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation, was shot and killed at around 3:50 p.m. while reportedly collecting market fees from shop operators.

The gunman was challenged and pursued by a police officer who was in the vicinity.

The two reportedly exchanged gunfire during which the gunman was hit.

He and Ms. Bernard were assisted to hospital.

The market manager was pronounced dead while the gunman is still receiving medical treatment.

Speaking on the incident, head of police area 4 Assistant Commissioner Michael Phipps said the alleged gunman is being probed by lawmen with hopes of determining a possible motive for the murder.

He also noted that the police’s investigation will include the examination of forensic materials.
