The management of The University of the West Indies (The UWI) Mona says they stand ready to provide support to a nine-year-old girl who was the victim of an attempted assault within the precincts of its campus this week.

The reported act, which was carried out by a security guard employed to King Alarm Limited – the security company contracted by the university – happened on Monday.

Describing the child as a “visitor”, The UWI Mona said Thursday it learnt “with deep regret” of the unfortunate incident, and the management of the regional educational institution stands ready to provide support despite the child not being a member of the community.

The perpetrator was apprehended, thanks to the swift response by security personnel who worked collaboratively with the Jamaica Constabulary Force, The UWI said.

The campus principal has asked the campus’ legal team and the director of security to meet with King Alarm to obtain a “fulsome report” on the incident and make recommendations to enhance the security of the members of our community and other stakeholders who use our facilities on a daily basis.

The UWI Mona said, too, that it continues its commitment to provide a safe space to all students, staff and visitors to the campus.
